I had no idea! All I wanted to do was travel and meet people in whatever I did. 2. Why did you decide to go for a career in food & drink? I spent a year working in consultancy – and it made me realise I wanted to do something tangible – working with real products, that people use every day. 3. Describe your job in one or two sentences. Grower Spotlight: Moyca
At Fresh Hub, we’re proud to introduce the growers and farms that are part of our family. We’re taking the opportunity to shine a spotlight on our grower shareholders, highlighting their unique strengths and contributions to the industry. From innovative farming practices, standout produce and sustainable production methods, each one brings something special to the table. Join us as we explore the stories behind the farms and the passionate individuals who cultivate the exceptional produce we all enjoy. This time we’re featuring Moyca, a renowned grower based in the heart of Spain’s Murcia region, who is setting new standards in the production of seedless table grapes. Moyca: Leading the way in Grape Production Moyca has its own production in Murcia, Alicante and Badajoz spanning over 2,200 hectares and producing over 54 varieties of white, red and black seedless grapes, including many speciality and organic grape varieties. 95% of the 70,000 tonnes production is exported from Spain, primarily to Europe and the United Kingdom. Moyca’s grapes are enjoyed worldwide, including in Dubai, South Africa, Hong Kong, Canada and Malaysia, and several countries across the Middle East and Asia. Climate and Altitude Moyca’s farms span from the coastal area of Águilas to the inland regions of northwest Murcia, including Archivel (Caravaca de la Cruz), the Altiplano de Jumilla, the Guadalentín valley, Lorca, Totana, Alhama, the Vega Media area in the Blanca countryside, and Molina de Segura. This diverse geography allows Moyca to produce early varieties in lower altitude areas, harvest mid-season varieties in mid-altitude regions, and extend the season while ensuring quality in higher altitude zones. Consistent temperatures throughout the season result in grapes that are rich in sugar, low in acidity and have fully developed flavour during ripening. Consequently, both the altitude and climate ensure a steady supply from June through November. Production and Varieties There are two production methods, one developed using conventional farming techniques and the other using organic production. Both types of production are carried out under the same system, called the Spanish grape-yard. The system serves as a support structure for the plant, so that all the vegetative development takes place two metres above the ground, forming a roof that protects the bunches of grapes. “This system is ideal in hot areas because it allows for greater aeration, more protection for the fruit from excess sun and, in addition, reduces the possibility of diseases or pests.” – Jerónimo García, Production Control Manager. For more than 30 years Moyca have been working hand in hand with breeders, developing new varieties of seedless table grapes under licence for production in the world’s main markets. Moyca is committed to producing the best grapes, focused on global producers, distribution channels, and consumers. They align innovation with market trends, emphasising high-demand varieties like Sweet Globe, Autumn Crisp, Crimson and Allison. Additionally, Moyca supports 30 associate farmers with technical assistance to ensure superior quality seedless grapes. Looking ahead, Moyca plans to continue expanding its production areas and developing new grape varieties to meet the evolving demands of the global market. Their ongoing investment in research and development ensures that they remain at the forefront of the industry. Sustainability Sustainability is at the core of Moyca’s operations. The company has implemented renewable energy systems, optimized irrigation water usage, and increased organic production. These efforts ensure that Moyca’s grapes are not only delicious but also environmentally friendly. They are committed to the sustainable development 2030 agenda with focus in the following areas of Sustainable Development Goals: No 6. Clean water and sanitisation focusing on Efficient use of water consumption & Optimisation of irrigation water No 7. From Vine to Shelf: A Grower Visit in Spain
The Northern hemisphere grape season is upon us, with production across the continent alive with the sights and sounds of grapes being harvested. Our team recently visited Moyca during the early part of August, to see some of the finest examples of grape varieties that will be shipping to the UK in the weeks and months ahead, just as the Spanish season is really getting into full swing. We enjoyed showcasing the fantastic farms in the Murcia region to our customers. They got to see the state-of-the-art packhouses in action with insights into the production and farm operations. We also loved sharing samples of some of our delicious grape varieties available! Our focus as always remains with selections of firm fruit with full colour and great eating quality, despite some of the recent weather challenges coming from the mixture of rising temperatures and storms that we’ve seen this season. As the sun blazes over the farms, the teams have been hard at work, meticulously selecting and packing the jewels of the grape season. Sweet Celebration, with its delightful size, rich colour, and tantalising taste, has turned in a good performance since late July. The grape variety Allison also made its appearance with bunches boasting good eating quality, a satisfying size and colour. Now, let’s talk whites. This year, we have seen a seamless transition from Sweet Globe from Egypt to Spanish Ivory followed by Sweet Globe to deliver great options for UK consumers. But what about Black grapes? Midnight Beauty delivered excellent eating quality this season. This has been followed up with ITUM 12, showing great promise in the fields with good size and colour. We are delighted to bring these wonderful grape varieties to our customers shelves, ensuring they can supply the best quality produce available to their customers. Stay tuned for more updates from our visits to source as they happen!
